The author of the article considers the experience of electronic filing in courts (e-filing) in the system of state courts of New York, USA. Having practical experience in the field of protection of hereditary rights, the author cites the view of a practicing lawyer on the introduction of electronic technologies in legal proceedings and the consequences of application of such innovations. The US experience shows that there is no complete transition to the examination of documents only in electronic form still, at least in the field of hereditary disputes, since in such cases the judge is required to familiarize himself with some documents in the form of originals, even if they were filed electronically. The author shows all stages of submitting documents to the court and, analyzing the experience of employees of his firm with the electronic filing system, comes to the conclusion that sometimes the old proven way of submitting documents to the court in paper form can even be faster than sending them electronically, though lawyer can make it without leaving his office. The article also provides an overview of the advantages of the electronic document management system, including, for example, such important aspect as environmental friendliness, since the use of documents in electronic form significantly reduces the amount of paper used. Still, e-filing system in the courts of New York has yet to be improved, and lawyers should get used to innovations.
